Since joining the FIFA list, Artan has steadily built a reputation as one of Africa’s most respected referees. His performances in continental competitions earned him appointments to major CAF tournaments and eventually FIFA competitions.
In January 2024, Artan made history when he became the first Somali referee to officiate at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He took charge of the Group E match between Tunisia national football team and Namibia national football team, a landmark moment that highlighted the growing recognition of Somali officials on the continental stage.
Artan’s rise continued when he became the first Somali referee to oversee a major continental club final. He officiated the CAF final involving Pyramids FC and Mamelodi Sundowns, further cementing his status among Africa’s elite referees.
He has also handled numerous CAF Champions League fixtures and other high-profile continental matches, earning praise for his consistency, discipline, and match management.
FIFA U-20 World Cup Selection
Before his World Cup appointment, Artan was selected among the referees for the 2025 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Chile. The assignment made him one of only a handful of African centre referees chosen for the global youth tournament and further demonstrated FIFA’s confidence in his abilities.
His performances at youth and continental tournaments were viewed as key stepping stones toward his eventual selection for the senior FIFA World Cup.
Artan’s achievements have earned him widespread recognition across Africa and Somalia. In 2025, he was named CAF’s Best Male Referee, becoming one of the most celebrated sports officials in Somali history. The award recognized his outstanding performances in international and continental competitions and his role in elevating Somalia’s profile within global football.
His selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup was also hailed by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who described the achievement as a source of national pride and a symbol of Somalia’s progress in international sport.
