While the traditional 11-a-side game has long dominated the headlines, Uganda is carving out a new path for women’s sports in the region. The Futsal Association Uganda (FAU) has officially announced the launch of the Maiden Women’s Futsal Uganda Cup, a first-of-its-kind competition in East Africa that promises to revolutionize the indoor game.
Set to kick off on Friday, February 6th, 2026, the tournament is more than just a domestic cup; it is a signal to the CECAFA region that the future of women’s football is diversifying.

By establishing a dedicated women’s cup, Uganda is providing a structural blueprint that neighboring nations can follow. The tournament features 10 pioneering teams, including Mengo City, Lubiri Falcons, and Entebbe Cheetahs, showcasing a depth of talent that is rarely seen in specialized indoor formats in the region.
The competition utilizes a high-intensity single-round knockout format, ensuring that every second on the court counts. This move follows recent FUFA mandates requiring top-tier clubs to operate women’s teams, further integrating female athletes into the professional sports fabric.
There will be a Double-Header on the opening day at the Old Kampala Futsal Arena, Kampala.
Old Kampala Ladies vs. Nansana Aska Ladies (5:00 PM)
Mengo City vs. Lubiri Falcons (6:00 PM)
Futsal is widely recognized as a “technical lab” for footballers. With players getting up to six times more ball contact than in the 11-a-side game, this cup will directly improve the technical proficiency, quick decision-making, and tactical intelligence of Ugandan players. As these athletes transition between formats, the overall standard of women’s football in the region is set to rise.
As the “Queens of the Court” prepare for battle, Uganda isn’t just launching a tournament—it’s setting a new standard for East African sports excellence.
