Mandera, Kenya: The town of Lafey was full of energy and celebration as youth, leaders, and football lovers gathered for the final match of the PS Ismail Maalim Madey Football Tournament, Lafey Subcounty Chapter. The tournament, which has been running over recent weeks, brought together teams from across the constituency in a spirited display of sportsmanship and community pride.

These recognitions served as a motivation for the youth, showing that hard work and discipline can be rewarded and appreciated even at grassroots levels.
Present at the awarding ceremony was Principal Secretary for Special Programmes, Mr. Ismail Maalim Madey, who served as the chief guest. His presence demonstrated a strong show of support from the national government in investing in youth development and community-based programs.
Also in attendance were Members of Parliament including Hon. Mohamed Abdikheir (Lafey), Hon. Major Rtd Bashir Abdullahi (Mandera North), and Hon. Hussein Weytan (Mandera East), alongside several Members of County Assembly. Their collective presence sent a strong message: youth empowerment through sports is a shared priority.
Hon. Mohamed Abdikheir, who played a key role in supporting the tournament, highlighted the importance of such initiatives. “This tournament is a symbol of unity, peace, and youth empowerment,” he said, while thanking PS Madey for gracing the event and backing the youth of Lafey.
Football tournaments like this play a vital role in bringing together young people from different areas and backgrounds, offering them not just a chance to compete, but a platform to express their talent, build friendships, and promote peaceful coexistence. In regions where opportunities are limited, sports become a powerful tool for engagement, growth, and social cohesion.
The PS Ismail Maalim Madey Football Tournament has not only left behind a list of winners but also lasting memories and new ambitions among hundreds of youth who participated. It has proven once again that when given a chance, the youth of North Eastern Kenya can rise, shine, and lead both on and off the pitch.
