Cabo Verde delivered one of the most memorable performances in their football history, holding European giants Spain national football team to a goalless draw after a disciplined defensive display and an inspired performance from goalkeeper Vozinha.
Despite Spain controlling possession for long periods and creating a succession of chances throughout the 90 minutes, they were unable to find a way past a resilient Cabo Verde side determined to secure a historic result.
Spain Start on the Front Foot

Spain began the match aggressively and won a corner within the opening three minutes after pressure from Marcos Llorente and Ferran Torres forced Cabo Verde onto the back foot.
Pedri registered Spain’s first clear attempt in the 15th minute, firing from distance, but Vozinha was equal to the effort. Moments later, Cabo Verde midfielder Sidny Cabral became the first player booked after bringing down Marcos Llorente.
La Roja continued to dominate possession and territory, with Fabián Ruiz trying his luck from outside the area on multiple occasions. Pau CubarsÃ, Gavi and Marc Cucurella also tested the Cabo Verde defence, but shots were either blocked or off target.
While Spain controlled the game, Cabo Verde remained dangerous on the counterattack. Ryan Mendes and Dailon Livramento repeatedly attempted to exploit space behind the Spanish defence, though several attacks were halted by offside flags.
Vozinha Keeps Spain Out

The best spell of the first half came late on when Spain laid siege to the Cabo Verde goal. In the 39th minute, Ferran Torres came agonisingly close to opening the scoring when he struck the crossbar from close range following excellent work by Marc Cucurella. Seconds later, Vozinha produced a magnificent save to deny Mikel Oyarzabal’s powerful header.
The Cabo Verde goalkeeper was called into action again during first-half stoppage time. He first saved Aymeric Laporte’s header before watching Rodri’s follow-up effort blocked by defenders. Oyarzabal then somehow headed wide from point-blank range in the dying moments of the half. By halftime, Spain had created numerous chances but remained frustrated at 0-0.
Spain Continue the Assault
The second half followed a similar pattern. Spain resumed with immediate pressure as Oyarzabal headed narrowly wide before Fabián Ruiz sent two efforts just over the crossbar.
Pedri continued to orchestrate attacks from midfield, while Rodri controlled possession and dictated the tempo. In the 56th minute, Vozinha made another important save, this time stopping a Fabián Ruiz header after a clever through ball from Pedri.
Laporte then fired over from distance before Spain won a succession of corners as Cabo Verde were pushed deeper into their own half.
The match was briefly interrupted by a drinks break before Cabo Verde coach made a triple substitution, introducing Willy Semedo, Deroy Duarte and Nuno da Costa in an effort to freshen the side and maintain their defensive structure.
Cabo Verde Refuse to Break
Despite relentless pressure, Cabo Verde continued to defend bravely. Diney Borges, Pico Lopes, Steven Moreira and Sidny Cabral repeatedly blocked Spanish attempts, while Ryan Mendes worked tirelessly whenever Cabo Verde regained possession.
Spain manager responded by introducing fresh legs, bringing on Mikel Merino and teenage sensation Lamine Yamal in the 71st minute. The substitutions immediately increased Spain’s attacking intensity.
Merino forced another save from Vozinha in the 73rd minute, while Ferran Torres, Pedri and Oyarzabal all saw efforts blocked by a packed Cabo Verde defence. Dani Olmo and Nico Williams were later introduced as Spain searched desperately for a breakthrough.
Dramatic Final Minutes
The final stages produced drama at both ends. With Spain committing numbers forward, Cabo Verde suddenly threatened a famous upset. In the 90th minute, Kevin Pina unleashed a shot from outside the box that was blocked before Cabo Verde won a corner.
From the resulting pressure, Telmo Arcanjo delivered an inviting cross that found Diney Borges. His powerful header looked destined for the net, but Unai Simón reacted brilliantly to save in the centre of the goal.
Spain immediately launched one final assault. Lamine Yamal saw a shot blocked in stoppage time before later curling another effort wide of the target. Pedri received a yellow card for a late foul as frustration began to show among the Spanish players.
When the final whistle arrived after five minutes of added time, the celebrations belonged to Cabo Verde.
Vozinha the Undisputed Hero
Although Cabo Verde’s defensive organisation was exceptional throughout, the standout performer was undoubtedly Vozinha.
The veteran goalkeeper denied Pedri, Oyarzabal, Laporte, Fabián Ruiz, Cucurella and Merino, while also benefiting from Ferran Torres striking the woodwork.
His commanding display ensured Cabo Verde secured a historic clean sheet against one of world football’s traditional powerhouses.
The goalkeeper’s extraordinary performance transformed what looked certain to be a Spanish victory into a famous point for Cabo Verde.
