PHILADELPHIA, USA — A dramatic stoppage-time strike from Amad Diallo earned Ivory Coast a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ecuador in a tightly contested FIFA World Cup encounter at Philadelphia Stadium on Monday.
With both sides struggling to find a breakthrough for much of the match, it appeared the contest was destined to end goalless. However, Diallo emerged as the hero in the 90th minute, calmly sweeping a low left-footed finish into the bottom corner after being picked out inside the penalty area by Wilfried Singo.
The late goal capped a disciplined performance from the African champions, who remained patient throughout a match dominated by defensive organization and physical battles in midfield.
Ecuador created several promising opportunities of their own and came closest in the 88th minute when Nilson Angulo’s precise pass found Joel Ordóñez inside the box. The defender unleashed a powerful right-footed effort from close range, but a crucial Ivory Coast block denied what looked like a certain goal.
Earlier in the second half, Seko Fofana tested Ecuador’s goalkeeper with a low strike from distance, while Nicolas Pépé’s best chance of the opening period drifted wide of the target.
The match saw plenty of physical challenges, with Ivory Coast receiving three yellow cards. Seko Fofana, Franck Kessié and Guela Doué were all booked by French referee François Letexier. Ecuador defender Jackson Porozo was the only player cautioned for La Tri.
Ivory Coast coach Emerse Faé’s substitutions proved decisive. Diallo, introduced in the 56th minute, made an immediate impact, while fellow substitute Ange Bonny added energy to the attack as the Elephants pushed for a winner.
Ecuador also turned to their bench in search of a breakthrough, bringing on Nilson Angulo, Angelo Preciado and Jackson Porozo before replacing captain Enner Valencia with Kevin RodrÃguez in the closing stages. Despite their efforts, the South Americans were unable to break down a resilient Ivorian defence.
The result gives Ivory Coast a valuable three points and continues their impressive momentum on the world stage, while Ecuador are left to reflect on a missed opportunity after holding firm for almost the entire contest.
