HISTORIC GLORY: Muteesa 1 Royal University Crowned Pepsi UFL Champions

In a historic afternoon that will be etched in the annals of university football in Uganda, Muteesa 1 Royal University ascended to the throne of the Pepsi University Football League (UFL) for the very first time.

The Masaka-based institution secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over YMCA Comprehensive Institute in a high-stakes final held at the Hamz Stadium (Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium) on Saturday.

The contest was decided by a moment of pure aerial dominance in the 28th minute. Roving right-back Twaha Bukenya delivered a pinpoint cross into the area, finding the rising Sam Mutambo. The clinical forward outjumped the YMCA backline to power home a header past goalkeeper Kevin Ssenabulya, sending the Muteesa faithful into a frenzy.

Despite the sweltering sunny conditions, George William Ssengabi’s men showed remarkable tactical discipline. Led by Captain Eddie Jjunju, Muteesa 1 Royal University managed the game with maturity, soaking up pressure from a determined YMCA side coached by Francisco Totti Ejuku.

YMCA pushed for an equalizer through the creative efforts of Danton Kaganzi and Farouk Wasswa, but the Muteesa defense, anchored by Shafik Ssentongo and Hamidu Ssuuna, remained unshakeable until the final whistle.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Muteesa 1 Royal University, as they clinch their maiden trophy since the inception of the league.

Earlier in the day, the third-place play-off saw Kampala University edge out St. Lawrence University with a 1-0 win to claim the bronze medal.
