Gor Mahia Edge AFC Leopards 1-0 to Win 99th Mashemeji Derby

The 99th edition of the Mashemeji Derby lived up to expectations as Gor Mahia secured a narrow 1-0 victory over arch-rivals AFC Leopards at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday.

The win handed Gor Mahia crucial bragging rights while extending their lead at the top of the FKF Premier League table to six points, with only five matches left to play.

Midfielder Alpha Onyango emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal in a tightly contested encounter that saw both sides create chances but struggle to convert.

The result also carried added significance for Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor, who handed Fred Ambani his first-ever Mashemeji Derby defeat as a manager.

AFC Leopards came into the match having made seven changes from the side that lost to Kenya Police FC, and they started brightly, pushing forward in search of an early breakthrough.

However, Gor Mahia also showed attacking intent, with Enock Morrison—turning out for K’Ogalo—testing the Leopards’ defence during a lively opening spell.

One of the best chances of the first half fell to Ebenezer Adu-Kwaw, who first sent a free-kick over the bar after being fouled just outside the area, before later forcing a fine save from goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi after being picked out by a well-weighted ball from Onyango.

Gor Mahia, who had gone three matches without a win prior to the derby, showed resilience and composure when it mattered most. Onyango’s goal ultimately proved enough to separate the two sides in a match defined by intensity, tactical discipline, and fierce rivalry.

The victory completes a dramatic turnaround after AFC Leopards had won the first leg by the same 1-0 margin, ensuring the derby spoils are shared this season.

With momentum now firmly on their side, Gor Mahia will be confident of closing out the campaign and extending their record as Kenya’s most successful club, while AFC Leopards will look to regroup after falling short in one of the country’s biggest fixtures.
