Burundi pipped Malawi 2-1 from the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup (U-17 WWC) qualifiers at Stade Intwari on Sunday in Bujumbura.
Nshizahabona Kerene and Kezakimana Ella scored for the hosts in the 10th and 14th minutes to condemn the Young Scorchers out of the race 4-2 on a aggregate.
The Malawians pulled one back in the second half but it was rather too little and too late as they needed a two-goal margin victory to progress through.
Going into the second leg, the Young Scorchers had their backs to the wall as they had lost the first leg 1-2 to Burundi in Lilongwe last Saturday.
Burundi are proceeding to the next round to meet either South Sudan or Ethiopia.
The world tournament will take place in Morocco from 17 October to 7 November 2026, with 24 sides set to battle it out.
