Confederation of African Football (CAF) Secretary General Véron Mosengo-Omba has stepped down from his role.

The official confirmed his resignation on Sunday, March 29, 2026, days after reports of certain quarters clamouring for his ouster.

In his resignation statement, Mosengo-Omba thanked CAF President Patrice Motsepe and the members of his team for their continued support during his tenure.

Stepping down

“After over 30 years of an international professional career dedicated to promoting an ideal form of football that brings people together, educates, and creates opportunities for hope, I have decided to step down from my position as Secretary General of CAF to devote myself to more personal projects,” part of his statement read.

Omba added that he was taking the break to focus on personal ventures.

Aspersion

He also addressed the events predating his resignation, specifically the rumours regarding those calling for his removal, remarking that he would now leave behind the aspersions they had cast on him.

“Now that I have been able to dispel the suspicions that some people have gone to great lengths to cast on me, I can retire with peace of mind and without constraint, leaving the CAF more prosperous than ever,” he added.

Reacting to the news, CAF President Patrice Motsepe announced that Mosengo-Omba is stepping down to take on a new role within the Democratic Republic of Congo’s football administration.

It is rumoured that he is angling for a leadership position at his home federation, the Congolese Association Football Federation (FECOFA).

Omba’s tenure

The 66-year-old has been criticised for staying on as general secretary past the organisation’s mandatory retirement age of 63.

He has also been accused by some employees of creating a toxic atmosphere in the workplace, although an investigation after staff complaints cleared him of any wrongdoing.

Mosengo-Omba, who hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo but also holds Swiss nationality, was appointed general secretary in March 2021.

During his tenure that spanned over three decades, Mosengo-Omba played a key role in advancing African football governance, development programs, and youth initiatives. His departure marks a major shift in African football leadership.

CAF officials thanked him for his dedication and leadership, highlighting his contribution to enhancing football across the continent.

Caf’s competitions director, Nigeria’s Samson Adamu has since been appointed the acting general secretary.
