In Accra, 15-year-old Souleymane Faye experienced a defining moment that could inspire anyone. Wearing the Senegal school jersey, this young talent, affectionately nicknamed ‘Commissioner,’ left a mark at the 2025 African Schools Football Championship by earning the prestigious Best Player of the Tournament award.
This achievement, remarkable for a boy still discovering his potential, propelled him to Morocco a few months later for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, albeit as a ball boy.
“It means a lot to me,” he shares softly, demonstrating humility rather than pride. “It is not something everyone gets to do.” At his young age, Faye emphasizes gratitude over personal glory, thanking CAF, his family, friends, teammates, and coaches, highlighting the importance of teamwork and collective effort.

His journey started far from the bright stadium lights, on the streets of Dakar at age six, where football is a daily hustle among friends on tarmac. “I started there when I was very young,” he recalls. School football provided him structure and rules, steering him closer to his dream, although he briefly explored baseball before football reaffirmed its place in his heart.
In Accra, Faye encountered a new world continental competition, immense pressure, and high standards. Recalling his favorite memory, he says, “Qualifying for the final was wonderful. We fought hard, and everyone gave their best.” Beyond individual accolades, the tournament reinforced his belief that African school children are capable of greatness without envy or doubt.
Recognition often comes unexpectedly. Weeks after the tournament, Faye received thrilling news, he had been chosen to serve as a ball boy at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. “I was very happy, moved, even surprised. I couldn’t believe it,” he recalls with a smile.

For Faye, being a ball boy means more than a modest role; it’s a window into the big stage. “It’s my first time experiencing this. I must stay focused,” he says, knowing the stadium noise, excitement, and proximity to legends await. “There will be a lot of noise, but I need to stay focused on the game and deliver the balls on time.” His maturity resonates, though he won’t be on the pitch, he will be right at the heart of the action.
Faye believes this experience will leave a lasting impact, an opportunity to observe, learn, and aspire. “One day, it will be me,” he affirms with determination—a reminder that dreams are just the beginning.
His ambition is clear: “Reach the highest level, European clubs like Barça, Real Madrid, Manchester City.” Smiling, but serious about his goals, he offers simple yet demanding advice to other young talents: “Work hard, stay focused, be serious.”

Behind his rising star stands a supportive family. He will travel to Morocco with his older brother, who expresses pride, saying, “It’s well-deserved.” Their collective pride underscores that success is built on long-term effort.
As AFCON 2025 approaches, Faye’s excitement is palpable. “I am very happy and think about it all the time—day and night,” he shares. While he does not know his exact stadium assignment yet, the thrill of being part of such a historic event energizes him.
Today, a ball boy; tomorrow, perhaps a player. Souleymane ‘Commissioner’ Faye’s journey is still unfolding. But from school pitches in Senegal and Ghana to Morocco’s grand stadiums, one truth remains—African football is rising, fueled by the dreams and determination of children like him, destined to reshape the future.
