FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has handed Burundi forward Bonfils Caleb Bimenyimana a stern punishment following a reckless challenge during a 2026 World Cup qualifier against Kenya on October 9.
The match, held in Bujumbura, took a troubling turn when Bimenyimana’s dangerous tackle on Harambee Stars goalkeeper Brian Bwire resulted in serious injury, leaving the Kenyan keeper visibly distressed and requiring immediate medical attention.
The incident occurred just minutes into the match, where Zambian referee Hillary Hambaba wasted no time in issuing a straight red card to the Burundian striker, effectively removing him from the game.
Bwire was left writhing in pain and had to be stretchered off the field after sustaining a severe cut above his eye. This injury subsequently sidelined him from his team’s following qualifier against the Ivory Coast.

Following a thorough review of the incident, FIFA ruled to extend Bimenyimana’s initial one-match ban to a total of three matches. Additionally, he has been fined CHF 5,000, as part of the disciplinary measures taken against him.
Under Article 14.1(e) of the Disciplinary Code, which addresses player misconduct and unsporting behaviour, the 27-year-old was found culpable for his recklessness.
Having already missed Burundi’s qualifier match against Gabon, Bimenyimana will be out for two more games as part of his suspension. The striker, who previously played for South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs, now represents Jeddah SC in the Saudi second division. Since joining the club earlier this year, he has made an impressive impact with four goals in seven appearances.
FIFA’s official statement emphasized that disciplinary actions are determined based on the circumstances of each case and highlighted that there remains a possibility for some decisions to be appealed. As the football world watches closely, this incident underscores the ongoing efforts by governing bodies to maintain player safety and enforce standards of conduct on the field.
