PHILADELPHIA, USA — Two clinical finishes from Nicolas Pépé guided Ivory Coast to a historic 2-0 victory over Curaçao on Thursday, sealing the Elephants’ place in the FIFA World Cup knockout rounds for the first time in the nation’s history.
The result secured second place in Group E behind Germany and completed a remarkable milestone for a country that has produced some of Africa’s greatest footballers but had never previously progressed beyond the group stage of the World Cup.
Ivory Coast will now travel to Arlington, Texas, where they will face the runner-up from Group I, either France or Norway, in Tuesday’s Round of 32 encounter.

Pépé Turns Back the Clock
Much of the spotlight belonged to Nicolas Pépé, whose international future had been questioned after falling out of recent tournament squads.
The experienced winger reminded the football world of his quality with two expertly taken goals that settled the contest.
His opener arrived inside the opening minutes after Curaçao gifted possession away in defence. Young winger Yan Diomande reacted quickest, stealing the ball before squaring for Pépé, who calmly finished to give the Elephants the perfect start.
Despite controlling possession for long periods, Ivory Coast struggled to add a second before halftime as Curaçao gradually settled into the match.

The Caribbean side created several dangerous moments of their own, with Tahith Chong providing pace on the counterattack and defenders Jurien Gaari and Sherel Floranus going close from set pieces. However, the breakthrough never came for the World Cup debutants.
Pépé finally put the result beyond doubt midway through the second half. A perfectly weighted through ball from Ibrahim Sangaré released the winger, who cut inside before curling an unstoppable finish into the far corner for his second goal of the evening and his first international brace in years.
Historic Achievement for the Elephants
The victory capped an impressive Group E campaign for Emerse Faé’s side. Ivory Coast opened with a narrow 1-0 victory over Ecuador before pushing four-time champions Germany all the way in a 2-1 defeat that was decided by a late winner. Needing only victory against Curaçao, the African champions delivered when it mattered most.
For a nation that previously failed to escape difficult World Cup groups featuring the likes of Argentina, Brazil, Portugal and the Netherlands during appearances between 2006 and 2014, reaching the knockout rounds represents one of the greatest achievements in Ivorian football history. The expanded 48-team World Cup has provided new opportunities, but the Elephants earned qualification through disciplined performances across all three matches.

Courageous Farewell for Curaçao
Although eliminated, Curaçao leave the tournament with plenty of pride. The smallest nation ever to qualify for a FIFA World Cup finals endured a brutal 7-1 defeat to Germany in their opening match but responded admirably by holding Ecuador to a goalless draw before battling bravely against Ivory Coast.
Their debut campaign may have ended without a knockout berth, but earning a World Cup point and competing fearlessly against established football nations marked a significant chapter in the country’s sporting history.
There is also uncertainty surrounding veteran coach Dick Advocaat, with reports suggesting the 78-year-old Dutchman may have overseen his final match in charge of the Caribbean nation.
Eyes on the Knockout Stage
With confidence restored and Pépé rediscovering his scoring touch, Ivory Coast now shifts its attention to an even greater challenge.
Awaiting them in Texas will be either France or Norway, with a place in the Round of 16 at stake.
After finally breaking the World Cup group-stage barrier, the Elephants will believe their historic journey may have only just begun.
