In one of the most stunning group-stage upsets in recent CECAFA Kagame Cup history, South Sudanese Premier League champions Jamus SC have sealed their place in the semi-finals, sending Tanzanian giants Simba SC and defending champions Singida Black Stars FC packing.
Saber Ben Jabria’s disciplined Jamus side navigated Group B undefeated to claim top spot with 7 points, writing a historic chapter for South Sudanese club football on the regional stage.
With qualification on the line on Friday evening, Group B delivered high-octane drama across both venues in Kigali.
Jamus SC found themselves behind in the 40th minute at the Kigali Pele Stadium after an unlucky own goal by Thomas Bawak Eta gave Mogadishu City Club an unexpected halftime lead.
Refusing to let their semi-final dream slip away, the South Sudanese outfit staged a fiery second-half rally. Mario Taban Cherelino leveled matters in the 55th minute, and just four minutes later, Lawrent Ramazani struck the decisive blow (59′) to complete the comeback, secure a 2–1 win, and seal top spot in Group B.
In the all-Tanzanian derby at Amahoro Stadium, Simba SC edged out Singida Black Stars 2–1 in a fierce battle.
Ibrahim Doumbia put Wekundu wa Msimbazi ahead in the 27th minute before Mathew Tegisi responded for Singida early in the second half (51′).
Elie Nkibisawala Mpazu netted the winner for Simba in the 66th minute.
However, the victory proved bittersweet for Simba. Finishing second with 5 points was not enough to advance, leaving both Tanzanian giants eliminated from the tournament.
Jamus SC’s tactical resilience and grit prove that South Sudanese club football is rapidly closing the gap on traditional regional powers.
Neither 2024 champions Singida Black Stars nor powerhouse Simba SC could find the gear needed to top the group, marking a surprising early exit for the NBC Premier League representatives.
