CAF President Patrice Motsepe has praised the outstanding performances of Africa’s 10 national teams at the FIFA World Cup 2026, describing their achievements as a defining moment for African football while unveiling several major initiatives that will shape the future of the game across the continent.
Speaking ahead of a series of important CAF events, Dr. Motsepe said Africa’s representatives at the expanded 48-team FIFA World Cup demonstrated the continent’s growing strength on the global stage, with several teams producing memorable performances against some of the world’s best football nations.
He emphasized that the success of African teams reflects years of investment in football development and should inspire Member Associations to continue improving youth development, coaching, infrastructure and governance.
Focus Turns to WAFCON in Morocco
Attention now shifts to the ongoing TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where Africa’s best women’s national teams continue to showcase the rapid growth of the women’s game.
CAF says the tournament has recorded increased fan engagement, improved competitiveness and growing commercial interest, underlining the remarkable progress women’s football has made across the continent.
Preparations Intensify for AFCON 2027 in East Africa
CAF also reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda as preparations continue for the historic TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) PAMOJA 2027.
The tournament will be the first AFCON to be jointly hosted by the three East African nations, marking a significant milestone for the region.
Infrastructure development, stadium upgrades, logistics, security and operational planning remain among the key priorities as the three countries work alongside CAF to deliver a successful championship.
CAF Opens Bidding for AFCON 2028, 2032 and 2036
In another major announcement, CAF officially opened the bidding process for the hosting rights of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations editions of 2028, 2032 and 2036.
Member Associations interested in hosting Africa’s biggest football tournament have been invited to submit their applications, beginning what is expected to be a competitive race for the prestigious events.
Commercial Rights Tender Launched
CAF has also launched the Invitation to Tender (ITT) for the commercial rights covering the AFCON 2028 and AFCON 2032 tournaments.
The tender offers broadcasters, sponsors, marketing agencies and commercial partners the opportunity to become part of Africa’s flagship football competition as CAF continues expanding the commercial value and global reach of its premier tournament.
Abuja to Host 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly
African football leaders will also gather in Abuja, Nigeria, for the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly.
The meeting is expected to address governance matters, football development strategies, commercial growth, competitions and long-term plans aimed at strengthening African football both on and off the pitch.
Dr. Motsepe reiterated that CAF remains committed to making African football globally competitive while improving governance, attracting greater investment and creating more opportunities for players, clubs and Member Associations across the continent.
