South African football has been plunged into mourning following the death of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams, who has died at the age of 25. The heartbreaking news was confirmed on Saturday by South Africa’s Ministry of Sport and the South African Football Players’ Union (SAFPU), sending shockwaves across the football world.

Adams had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he featured in all three group-stage matches. He started against Mexico and the Czech Republic before coming off the bench in Bafana Bafana’s historic 1-0 victory over South Korea, a result that secured the nation’s first-ever place in the World Cup knockout stage. South Africa’s remarkable journey eventually ended with defeat to Canada in the Round of 32.
The talented midfielder was also instrumental in Mamelodi Sundowns’ successful 2025/26 season, helping the Pretoria giants lift the CAF Champions League trophy. Having developed through the youth ranks at Stellenbosch FC, Adams earned a move to Sundowns in January 2025 and quickly established himself as one of South Africa’s brightest football talents.
Adams made his senior international debut in 2022 and went on to earn 13 caps for Bafana Bafana, scoring two goals during South Africa’s successful 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.
