TANZANIA’s football icon and captain Mbwana Samatta has officially retired from international football, bringing the curtain down on a remarkable 15 year journey with the national team.
The 33-year-old striker, who currently plays for French side Le Havre AC, announced his retirement on July 7, 2026, through a heartfelt statement posted on his social media platforms. His decision marks the end of an era for Tanzania, where he served as national team captain for 10 years and inspired the country’s rise on the African football stage.
His illustrious football career as a player of Tanzania’s national team Taifa Stars that saw him become one of the country’s greatest ever players and longest serving captains.
Samatta’s international career coincided with one of the most successful periods in the history of Tanzanian football.
As captain, he guided Taifa Stars to qualification for three Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments in 2019, 2024, and 2025, achievements that re-established Tanzania among Africa’s competitive football nations.
Under his leadership, the national team also achieved another historic milestone by reaching the AFCON Round of 16 for the first time ever, a breakthrough widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest football accomplishments.
Samatta leaves the national team with an impressive record of 87 appearances and 22 goals, cementing his place among Tanzania’s most influential footballers.
In his retirement message, Samatta said his decision was motivated by a desire to create room for the next generation of players to lead the national team.
He noted that, after turning 33, he believes it is the appropriate time to step away from international football and allow younger talents to continue building on the progress made over the past decade.
The experienced forward expressed confidence that the emerging generation possesses the quality and determination needed to take Taifa Stars to even greater heights in future continental and global competitions.
Samatta also used the opportunity to thank Tanzanians for their unwavering support throughout his international career. He extended his appreciation to the Government of Tanzania, the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), coaches, teammates, and supporters who stood behind him during every stage of his journey.
