Mikel Merino once again proved why he is becoming Spain’s ultimate game-changer, needing just two minutes after stepping off the bench to score the dramatic winner that sent La Roja into the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals.
The Arsenal midfielder replaced Dani Olmo in the 86th minute with Spain locked at 1-1 against Belgium in Los Angeles. Barely two minutes later, Merino found himself in the right place at the right time to smash home the decisive goal in the 88th minute, sealing a thrilling 2-1 victory.
It was another remarkable cameo from the Spanish substitute, who is developing a reputation for delivering when his country needs him most.
With extra time looming, young defender Pau Cubarsà unleashed a fierce long-range effort that substitute goalkeeper Senne Lammens could only parry into a dangerous area. Merino reacted quicker than every Belgian defender, racing onto the loose ball before emphatically firing into the roof of the net despite being clattered moments after striking the ball.
The late strike sparked wild celebrations among the Spanish players and supporters as Belgium’s hopes of forcing extra time disappeared in heartbreaking fashion.
The goal was Merino’s second decisive contribution as a substitute in consecutive knockout matches. He had also come off the bench to score the winner against Portugal in the Round of 16, underlining his growing reputation as Spain’s supersub.
Spain had earlier taken the lead through Fabian Ruiz in the 30th minute before Charles De Ketelaere equalised for Belgium just before halftime. Despite dominating possession throughout the contest, Luis de la Fuente’s side struggled to find a breakthrough until Merino’s late intervention.
