Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia patron Eliud Owalo has pledged steer Kenya to its first-ever FIFA World Cup qualification if elected as the president of Kenya.
“Under my government, Kenya will be able to qualify for the next World Cup finals in the year 2030 that will be co-hosted in Spain, Portugal and Morocco,” he said during the official launch of the People’s Prosperity Party (PPP), where he declared his bid for the Kenyan presidency in the general elections to be held in 2027.
He wondered why a country like Cape Verde which which Kenya has been beating reached the round of 32 in their first attempt at the ongoing FIFA World Cup and yet the country is yet to impress at the international and continental stages.
Owalo said his vision is for Kenyan teams and athletes to qualify for major international tournaments including the Olympics through deliberate investment in sports infrastructure and talent development.
Owalo also pledged to improve the welfare of retired sportsmen and women by introducing a national medical scheme and pension programme.
“It is very sad that our sportsmen and women who gave us joy and pride during their heydays today struggle after retirement. We are going to establish a medical scheme and a pension scheme for all our retired sportsmen and women,” he said.
Launching the party on Wednesday, Owalo outlined what he described as a transformational agenda anchored on tax reforms, economic growth, sports development, constitutionalism and the rule of law. He said Kenya needed “a fresh start” after decades of missed opportunities.
Owalo said all the reforms proposed by his party would be anchored on the Constitution, maintaining that every Kenyan should be treated equally before the law.
“Today, I officially announce that I intend to seek the presidency of the Republic of Kenya on the People’s Prosperity Party ticket. The party nominates me as its flag bearer,” Owalo said.
The party, whose slogan is “Ustawi kwa Wote“, also unveiled its headquarters, Ustawi House, which will serve as the party’s national office and secretariat.
Owalo said the People’s Prosperity Party is founded on the principle of ensuring prosperity reaches every Kenyan, with the slogan “Ustawi kwa Wote” reflecting its commitment to inclusive economic growth and shared national development.
The presidential hopeful urged leaders whom he described as progressive to use his party ticket to contest for various seats.
