SEATTLE, USA — Senegal’s dream of reaching the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 ended in the cruellest fashion on Wednesday night after the Lions of Teranga surrendered a two-goal advantage before suffering a heartbreaking 3-2 extra-time defeat to Belgium in one of the most dramatic matches of the 2026 tournament.
For more than 85 minutes, Senegal looked destined to become the second African nation after Morocco to book a place in the last 16. Instead, they were left devastated as Belgium completed an astonishing comeback that will be remembered as one of the greatest escape acts in World Cup history.
Habib Diarra opened the scoring before Ismaila Sarr doubled Senegal’s advantage, capping a dominant performance that had Belgium’s experienced stars on the brink of elimination. Following a lengthy VAR review, Belgium were awarded a controversial penalty after Lamine Camara was adjudged to have fouled Tielemans inside the area. Tielemans calmly converted from the spot in the 125th minute, completing a remarkable turnaround and sending Belgium into the Round of 16.
For Senegal, the defeat will leave painful questions about game management after controlling virtually the entire contest.

Defender Krépin Diatta summed up the mood after the final whistle, admitting the team had been on the verge of writing another glorious chapter in Senegalese football before everything unravelled in the closing minutes.
The loss is another bitter blow for African football after several nations showed they could compete with the world’s elite throughout the tournament.
Senegal arrived in the knockout stage with confidence after navigating a difficult group and once again demonstrated the continent’s growing strength on the global stage. Yet, unlike Morocco, who advanced after eliminating the Netherlands—Senegal’s campaign ended with heartbreak instead of celebration.
Belgium now progress to the Round of 16, where they will face the United States after surviving what looked like certain elimination.
For Africa, Senegal’s exit is especially painful because it was not caused by being outclassed,it came after being just minutes away from a famous victory.
The Lions of Teranga leave the 2026 FIFA World Cup with their heads held high, but also with the lingering feeling that one of the greatest victories in African football history slipped through their fingers at the very last moment.
