Tunisia – The first African side to bow out after failing to progress beyond the group stage.
South Africa – Eliminated in the Round of 32 following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Canada.
Ivory Coast – Exited after a spirited 2-1 loss to Norway despite a determined second-half fightback.
This leaves Senegal, Egypt and either Ghana or another remaining African qualifier (depending on the latest Round of 32 fixtures) carrying the continent’s hopes into the next phase of the tournament.
Ivory Coast’s brave fight against Norway
Ivory Coast’s World Cup campaign came to an end after a hard-fought 2-1 defeat to Norway in Arlington, Texas.
After falling behind in the first half, the Elephants responded with determination. Amad Diallo inspired hopes of a comeback with a brilliant equaliser in the 74th minute, only for Norway captain Erling Haaland to score the decisive goal four minutes from time.
Although the result ended Ivory Coast’s campaign, the Elephants left the tournament having showcased resilience, attacking quality and the growing competitiveness of African football on the global stage.
Africa’s hopes remain alive
With South Africa and Ivory Coast now out, three African nations remain in the race, carrying the continent’s ambitions into the next phase of the tournament. Their performances will determine whether Africa can continue its impressive showing and challenge for an unprecedented place in the latter stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
