AFCON 2027 Qualifiers: Burundi Ease Past Chad 4-0 in Second Leg of Preliminary Round tie

Burundi cruised to the group stage of qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after another 4-0 victory over Chad Stade Intwari (Stadium of Heroes) in Bujumbura, to qualify on a 8-0 aggregate victory, on Tuesday, March 31st, 2026.

One time Czech First League champions FC Zbrojovka Brno forward Bienvenue Kanakimana scored a first half brace before Jean Claude Girumugisha of Sudanese side Al Hilal Omdurman scored the fourth and set up the fourth goal after halftime.

Belgian-based midfielder Jordi Liongola who features for  Belgian Pro League side RAAL La Louvière set up the opening goal with a defense-splitting pass to send Kanakimana in on goal in the 14th minute.

Liongola and Kanakimana combined again to calmly slot the ball past the Chad goalkeeper, double the lead before halftime, igniting celebrations among the home fans.

Jean Girumugisha added a third goal in the 71st minute, Abdoul Karim sealed the victory in the 80th minute with a precise finish, , rounding off a near-perfect display.

The Swallows last qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019, their only appearance at the finals and fans will be hoping that this emphatic performance is the start of a memorable qualifying campaign.
