Slum Boys Capture Leopards as Nairobi United Humble Ex-Kenyan Premier League Champs

Mathare United made a second-half comeback to thrash AFC Leopards 4-1 in a SportPesa League fixture played on Saturday, 14 March at Nyayo National Stadium.

The defeat dealt a significant blow to Leopards’ title ambitions handing a major advantage to rivals Gor Mahia, who now have the opportunity to widen the gap at the summit when they take to the pitch on Sunday.

Leopards entered the encounter riding a wave of strong form, having won seven of their last ten matches, including a convincing 5-1 victory over Shabana in their previous league outing.

On the other hand, Mathare United arrived at Nyayo under pressure after managing just one win in their previous five matches and enduring a three-match winless run that included back-to-back defeats against Shabana and Gor Mahia.

Leopards captain Victor Omune connected with a Sichenje cross, calmly guiding his effort past Mathare goalkeeper Kevin  Ouru for the opening goal.

Substitute Paul Kinyanjui delivered a  cross that Leopards goalkeeper James Ssetuba failed to hold onto, allowing Brian Ouru to pounce on the loose ball and slot it home for the leveller in the 77th minute.

In the 82nd minute Ouru inished to give Mathare the lead for the first time in the match after a one-on-one situation with Ssetuba before Isaac Omweri  curled a brilliant effort into the net to further extend the lead five minutes later.

Ian Omondi added a fourth goal in the fifth minute of added time, sealing a remarkable comeback victory and condemning Leopards to their heaviest defeat of the season.

The result leaves AFC Leopards stuck on 43 points in the title race, six points behind leaders Gor Mahia, who now have the chance to further strengthen their position at the top when they play on Sunday.

Posta Rangers 2 Kenya Police 0

Posta Rangers on Friday 13 March ended their 11-game winless run in the Premier League with a priceless 2-0 victory over defending champions Kenya Police FC at Kasarani Annex.

The Mailmen, who were on their worst run of form this season, made one of their recent efforts stick as they stunned Nicholas Muyoti’s side to pick up a first league win since 8 December last year.

Charles Omondi’s underdogs took the lead in the seventh minute when Jackson Macharia punished some slack defending from the visitors, before second-half substitute Dinken Mwema netted the second in the 78th minute to wrap up the seemingly comfortable victory.
