Police Gun Down Army Men to Emerge Rwandese Heroes

Twenty three times Rwanda Premier League winners Armée Patriotique Rwandaise Football Club (APR)  were dethroned by Police FC as the 2026 Heroes Cup champions.

The law enforcers edged the rivals and military side APR FC 7–6 on penalties after a tense 1–1 draw in regulation time at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali.

Police FC’s second Heroes Cup title in three years, having also defeated APR in the 2024 final. For APR FC, hopes of back-to-back titles ended in heartbreak.

Police’s talisman was goalkeeper Patience Niyongira, introduced late in the second half, who saved crucial penalties from Dauda Yussif, William Togui, and Ronald Ssekiganda.

The decisive moment arrived when Nigerian defender David Chimezie stepped up and held his nerve to convert the ninth penalty, sealing a 7–6 victory and sparking wild celebrations among Police FC players and supporters.

The women’s Heroes Cup ended on favour of

Rayon Sports WFC defeated Indahangarwa 2-0 in the women’s Heroes Cup final earlier in the day.

Emeline Mukagatete and Angelique Umuhoza scored a goaal each  for the Blues to win their second trophy of the season after beating the same team to win the Super Cup.
