The FUFA Beach Soccer League produced an afternoon of pure drama at the Bamboo Gardens Arena on Match Day 5. From a shorthanded masterclass by the defending champions to a historic individual scoring spree, the league standings have been shaken up as the race for the title intensifies.
Kampala City reclaimed their spot at the summit of the table, but it was far from easy. The champions arrived for their fixture against Grace Church with a significant disadvantage, fielding only four players and no substitutes.
Grace Church looked poised to capitalize on the fatigue, racing to a 2nd-period lead. However, the champions’ pedigree shone through. A brace from Ambrose Kigozi and a clutch performance from Hassan Luboyera kept them in the hunt. In a heartbreaking turn for Grace Church, a late own goal by Jonathan Mwanawangu sealed a 4-3 victory for City, catapulting them to 12 points and the top of the league.
While Kampala City won with grit, Buganda Royal won with flair, thanks to Joseph Ssendi. In a clinical display against Mengo Hill, Ssendi put on a finishing clinic, netting six goals to lead his side to a 6-1 victory.
The performance was a much-needed boost for Buganda Royal, who have struggled for consistency this season. Ssendi’s double hat-trick now puts him firmly in the conversation for the Golden Boot, trailing only Kampala City’s Kigozi.
