Rwanda national team midfielder Hakim Sahabo has completed a move to 13 times Greece’s football top flight Super League 1 champions AEK Athens from Belgium’s Standard Liège.
The 20-year-old arrives for a transfer fee of €1.5 million (approximately Rwf 2.6 billion) after making 73 appearances for Standard Liège after signing a five year deal.
A versatile central midfielder who can operate in both attacking and defensive roles, he arrives at AEK Athens at a strong moment for the club, with the Greek giants currently top of the Super League standings on 44 points after 18 matches table with a one-point lead over PAOK. .
AEK Athens also performed well in the league phase of the UEFA Conference League, qualifying directly to the Round of 16 after finishing third on the league phase table.
Sahabo’s journey began in the youth ranks of KRC Genk, before joining Standard Liège’s academy in 2020. A year later, he moved to France to join LOSC Lille’s U17 side, later progressing to the U19 team.
In 2023, Sahabo returned to Belgium with Standard Liège 16 FC, earning promotion to the first team at the start of 2024.
Born in Belgium to a Burundian father and a Rwandan mother, Sahabo elected to represent Rwanda and made his debut for Amavubi (the Wasps) at the age of 17 in a friendly match against Sudan on November 17, 2022.
