Gor Mahia Pull Away, Sofapaka Flounder as KPL enters home stretch

Gor Mahia’s march toward another FKF Premier League title gathered serious steam on Saturday afternoon. In a clinical display of power and precision, the league leaders swept aside Sofapaka 3-0 at Nyayo National Stadium, leaving Batoto ba Mungu rooted in the relegation dogfight.

The victory moves Gor Mahia to 40 points, four clear of rivals AFC Leopards, who now face immense pressure to win their game in hand.

If there were any doubts about Gor Mahia’s depth, they were silenced within the first half-hour. The scoring opened in the 13th minute when Frank Odhiambo marked his return to the starting XI with a towering header.

Before Sofapaka could catch their breath, Sylvester Owino made it 2-0 in the 18th minute, punishing a disorganised defence. The contest was effectively buried by the 31st minute when Ebenezer Adukwaw coolly converted from the spot after Shariff Musa was hacked down in the area.

While Gor Mahia celebrated a clean sheet and three points, the situation for Sofapaka is becoming critical. Sitting 17th in the standings, the 2009 champions looked devoid of ideas against a Gor Mahia side that dominated the midfield through Jackson Dwang and Enock Morrison.

Elsewhere, the league provided plenty of drama for the neutral fan in Bukhungu stadium.

Kakamega Homeboyz and Mara Sugar played out a chaotic 3-3 draw, a result that keeps Homeboyz in the top three but leaves them 12 points adrift of the summit.

At Kasarani Annext The Bankers’ bounced back to winning ways after securinga massive 2-1 away against Mathare United, piling more misery on the Slum Boys.

Tusker FC and Posta Rangers cancelled each other out in a 1-1 draw, slowing down Tusker’s attempt to climb into the top five.

The league doesn’t rest. Today (Sunday ), the focus shifts to the following high-stakes encounters:

Shabana vs. Bandari: Tore Bobe will look to leapfrog into third place with a win at home.

Kariobangi Sharks vs. Ulinzi Stars: A battle for mid-table stability.

Murang’a SEAL vs. APS Bomet: A crucial “six-pointer” at the bottom of the log.
