AFCON 2025: Congo DR edge Benin in tight Group clash

The Democratic Republic of Congo opened their TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Benin at Stade El Barid in Rabat, thanks to an early strike from Théo Bongonda.

Bongonda scored the decisive goal in the 16th minute, finishing clinically from close range after a low delivery by Arthur Masuaku. The goal proved enough on a night marked by physical battles, stoppages and late Beninese pressure.

Benin responded well after conceding and created several chances, especially from set pieces, but lacked precision in the final third. Aiyegun Tosin and Tamimou Ouorou both went close, while Congo DR goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi made key saves to preserve the lead.

Congo DR thought they had doubled their advantage early in the second half when Cédric Bakambu found the net, but the goal was ruled out by VAR for offside, keeping Benin in the contest.

The closing stages were tense, with 10 minutes of added time played, but Sébastien Desabre’s side held firm to secure all three points.

Result:

Congo DR 1–0 Benin
Scorer: Théo Bongonda (16’)
The win gives Congo DR a positive start to their AFCON 2025 group campaign, while Benin will look to bounce back in their next fixture.
