Patson Daka’s stoppage-time header rescued a dramatic point for Zambia as they held Mali to a 1–1 draw in their TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Group match on Monday evening.
Mali looked set for victory after Lassine Sinayoko fired them ahead in the 61st minute, reacting quickest inside the box to finish from close range following a corner. The Eagles had dominated long spells of the second half and appeared in control after taking the lead.
However, Zambia showed resilience and refused to surrender. Their persistence was finally rewarded deep into added time when Mathews Banda delivered a teasing cross into the area, which Patson Daka met with a powerful header to beat Djigui Diarra and level the scores in the 90+2nd minute.
The result came as a major relief for the Chipolopolo, who had earlier survived a huge scare in the first half. Zambia goalkeeper Willard Mwanza emerged as a hero after saving El Bilal Touré’s penalty in the 42nd minute, denying Mali the chance to take an early lead after a VAR-awarded spot kick.
Both teams created chances in an open contest marked by high intensity, frequent fouls, and multiple stoppages due to injuries. Mali pressed hard late on, while Zambia threatened on set pieces and counterattacks.
In the end, the spoils were shared, with the draw keeping both teams firmly in contention in the group as the tournament continues.
