Nairobi United Faces Stiff Challenge in CAF Debut as Wydad Casablanca Secures Convincing 3-0 Victory

Nairobi United faced a tough initiation into the CAF Confederation Cup group stage as they were decisively defeated 3-0 by Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in their opening match of Group B on Sunday. The match, held at the iconic Stade Mohammed V, showcased Wydad’s dominance and left the Kenyan debutants with much to ponder for their upcoming fixtures.

Despite the early excitement of kicking off their CAF campaign, Nairobi United found themselves under pressure almost immediately. Wydad struck within just three minutes of the whistle when Ayoub Boucheta capitalized on sloppy defending, slipping into the box to convert a well-worked play down the right flank. This early goal not only settled Wydad’s nerves but also forced Nairobi to play catch-up against a much-fancied opponent.

As the match progressed, Wydad established control in midfield, stifling any attempts from Nairobi United to build attacks. The visitors struggled to create clear-cut chances, with their best attempts thwarted by a well-organized Wydad back line. To add insult to injury, a yellow card for Boniface Mzee in the 72nd minute illustrated the frustrations of the night for Nairobi, who found it difficult to make an impact offensively.

The situation worsened just before halftime when Mohamed Bouchouari doubled the Moroccan side’s lead in the 44th minute. Arriving from deep in a well-executed flowing move, Bouchouari’s finish provided Wydad with a comfortable two-goal cushion going into the break.

After halftime, Nairobi United showed greater resilience and introduced fresh players to spark their comeback hopes. However, despite half hearted attempts to regain control, they were unable to convert their territorial possession into substantial scoring opportunities. Wydad’s defense remained resilient, and the Kenyan side was left searching for solutions that never quite materialized.

As the clock ticked down, Wydad put the game to bed with a third goal in the 86th minute courtesy of substitute Mohamed Rayhi. The goal, which involved a slick pass from Walid Sabbar and a neat finish from Rayhi, highlighted the gap in class on the night and capped off a convincing victory for Wydad.

This defeat places Nairobi United at the bottom of Group B, leaving them with the daunting task of regrouping and strategizing for their next match in order to have any hope of advancing in the tournament. The team’s inability to convert opportunities and their overall performance against a seasoned opponent will require critical review as they aim to bounce back and make their mark in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Meanwhile, Wydad’s commanding performance not only secures them three crucial points but also puts them at the top of Group B, showcasing their intent to reclaim glory in this prestigious tournament.
