The Super Falcons of Nigeria have proudly confirmed their qualification for the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, set to take place in Morocco in 2026. As the reigning champions, Nigeria demonstrated their unparalleled prowess in women’s football, sealing their spot through a commanding display over two legs against Benin.
In the first leg, held in Cotonou, Nigeria showcased their strength with a decisive 2–0 victory. They carried this momentum into the return leg in Abeokuta, where a hard-fought 1–1 draw clinched their remarkable achievement of 16 consecutive qualifications for the continent’s premier women’s tournament—a record that stands unmatched in African football history.
The atmosphere at the MKO Abiola Stadium was electric as the Super Falcons approached the second leg with confidence, buoyed by their lead. Guided by Coach Justine Madugu, Nigeria dominated possession from the opening whistle, effectively controlling the flow of the game. Their efforts paid off in the 12th minute when Ashleigh Plumptre, the tenacious Al-Ittihad defender, broke through with a stunning left-footed strike from the edge of the box, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Despite Nigeria’s initial control, the Beninese squad, led by emerging talent Yasmine Djibril, refused to back down. In the 61st minute, Djibril capitalized on a defensive lapse, equalizing with a low, clinical finish that ignited celebration among the travelling supporters. However, the Super Falcons remained composed in the face of adversity, relying on the steady hands of goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and the defensive prowess of Osinachi Ohale to maintain their lead and secure their passage to Morocco.
With a total aggregate score of 3–1, Nigeria’s impressive journey to the tournament is a testament to their skill, resilience, and commitment to women’s football on the continent. As they prepare to defend their title in 2026, the Super Falcons continue to inspire future generations of footballers across Nigeria and beyond.
