In a momentous achievement, the Kenya national senior women’s football team, Harambee Starlets, has secured their place in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after an impressive 4-1 aggregate victory against The Gambia in the final qualification round. This triumph marks Kenya’s return to the continental tournament after a decade-long absence.
The Starlets delivered a commanding home performance on Friday, 24 October, at the Nyayo National Stadium, winning the first leg 3-1. With their eyes set on qualification, the team showed determination and resilience throughout both legs of the tie. A crucial 1-0 win in the away match on Tuesday, 28 October, at Stade Lat Dior in Thies, Senegal, sealed their advancement, showcasing their strategic play under the guidance of coach Beldine Odemba.
As the second leg commenced, the stakes were high. Kenya only needed to avoid a defeat by more than a goal to ensure their spot in WAFCON. The match started with a cautious approach from both sides, as they carefully navigated the field to avoid giving away early opportunities. The first true chance of the game came in the 14th minute when The Gambia’s header was expertly saved by Kenyan goalkeeper Lilian Anyango.
Kenya began to find their rhythm, with Elizabeth Wambui nearly scoring in the 24th minute through a clever assist to Shaylene Opiyo, whose effort narrowly missed the target. The pace of the game quickened, yet both teams struggled to capitalize on their chances, leading to a tense yet scoreless first half.
The Starlets returned for the second half with renewed vigor. Their persistence paid off in the 51st minute when a well-placed long ball from Wambui caught the Gambian defense off guard, allowing Mwanalima Adam to tap in a header into an empty net, sending waves of celebration through their supporters.
Although The Gambia intensified their efforts in response, they found it difficult to penetrate Kenya’s sturdy defense, failing to convert their possession into clear goal-scoring opportunities. A notable moment came in the 71st minute when a weak header from Mariama Cham underscored the Gambian frustration.
As the clock wound down, Kenya faced a setback with the injury of Violet Nanjala, but her replacement Leah Cherotich held firm as the Starlets remained vigilant. Forward Fasila ‘Kamama’ Adhiambo came close to double their lead in the 85th minute, but the shot sailed wide with the Gambian goalkeeper out of position. The tension built as The Gambia earned a late free kick, yet Anyango’s quick reflexes ensured both teams left the field with no further changes to the scoreline.
With the final whistle, ecstasy erupted among the Kenyan players and fans alike, knowing they had not only eliminated The Gambia but also earned their long-awaited place in WAFCON, set to take place from 17 March to 3 April 2026 in Morocco.
In addition to the thrill of qualification, the team has also been rewarded for their achievements, as President William Ruto has announced a financial incentive of Ksh1 million for each player, recognizing their hard work and determination.
The Harambee Starlets’ remarkable journey back to WAFCON is a testament to their spirit and talent, igniting hopes for an exciting 2026 tournament ahead.
