Nairobi United Stuns Étoile du Sahel with 2-0 Victory in CAF Confederation Cup Preliminary Round

In a stunning display of skill and determination, Nairobi United secured a landmark 2-0 victory over Tunisian giants Étoile du Sahel during the first leg of the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Sunday. This crucial win places the Kenyan club on the brink of advancing to the group stage for the very first time.

From the moment the match kicked off, Nairobi United displayed an aggressive and purposeful approach. They dominated possession and maintained their composure against a formidable opponent known for its experience in continental competitions.

The first breakthrough came in the 37th minute, when forward Ovella Ochieng capitalized on a slip from the Sahel defense, slotting the ball home to ignite exuberant celebrations from the bench and the small contingent of supporters.

As the second half unfolded, Nairobi United continued to assert their dominance. Just seven minutes after the restart, John Otieno extended the lead to two goals with a well-placed strike in the 52nd minute, punishing a poor clearance from the visiting defense.

The home side’s confidence was palpable, and they nearly added a third goal shortly afterward when Ochieng rattled the crossbar from close range, following a slick buildup on the right flank.

Despite the absence of fans in the stadium, the Spirit of Nairobi United was evident as they dictated the pace of the game, exhibiting a level of maturity and tactical structure that belied their limited experience on the continental stage.

Their journey to this point has been a testament to hard work, having qualified for the Confederation Cup by clinching the FKF Cup last season and edging past Uganda’s NEC FC on away goals in the earlier round.

Now, with a week of preparations ahead, Nairobi United will shift their focus to the upcoming second leg in Tunisia against Étoile du Sahel, set for Sunday, October 26.

Standing in their way is the daunting challenge of overcoming the two-goal deficit, as the Tunisian team will need to score at least three goals without reply to keep their hopes alive.

For Nairobi United, the dream of advancing to the group stage is tantalizingly within reach, and this pivotal victory has certainly set the stage for what promises to be a thrilling return leg.
