Kampala. Uganda: National Enterprises Corporation Football Club’s head coach, Hussein Mbalangu, shared his thoughts on securing a vital draw against Nairobi United, underscoring the importance of the upcoming return leg in Nairobi.
Despite the disappointment of not winning, Mbalangu expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, stating that they were the better side on the pitch.
The draw leaves the competition wide open, and the NEC team is actively regrouping to correct mistakes noted during the match. Mbalangu emphasized the need to strengthen their defensive strategies and improve striker efficiency in order to make the most of scoring opportunities in the future.
“We are very happy because we are still alive, and we got a point, although that’s not the result we wanted,” he said.
In the first leg, although Nairobi United managed to score, Mbalangu believes his players created more chances and dominated overall play. He mentioned that the team is focusing on mental and physical training to address issues that led to conceding the goals.
“When you look at the creation of chances we had, we were more than them,” he noted, emphasizing their intention to rectify these issues before the next game.
As they prepare for the return leg, the coach highlights the importance of an early journey to Nairobi, with the aim of mitigating player fatigue.
“We are setting off early in the morning (Wednesday 23th September 20225). By tomorrow, we shall be in Nairobi ready to fight. Our target is clear: we want to eliminate them at their home ground,” Mbalangu declared.
In terms of player injuries, Okoromo will be sidelined due to a knee injury, while Jariyoko is nursing a facial cut but is expected to participate in training. Kuranga is also experiencing joint pain, and although Jariyoko may be available, Kromwell will not travel due to ongoing knee issues. Mbalangu confirmed,
“We will have to manage the squad carefully, but the rest are fit and ready to give a good display.”
With a determined mindset and a clear game plan, NEC looks forward to the challenge ahead, with hopes of advancing in the competition. Mbalangu remains optimistic, believing that with the right adjustments, they can turn the tables on Nairobi United in the imminent encounter. “It’s going to be a different game,” he concluded, indicating a renewed focus and preparation for the pivotal clash.
The match is scheduled for Saturday 27th September 2025 at Nyayo National Stadium. Kick-off time is 4:00 PM EA.
