Gor Mahia Faces Disappointment in Season Opener Against Bidco United

Nairobi, Kenta: Kenya’s football giant Gor Mahia had a tough start to the 2025-2026 Kenya Premier League season, losing 1-0 to Bidco United at the Kasarani Stadium on Sunday, 21 September.

Fans were hoping for a fresh beginning under new coach Charles Akonnor, but it turned out to be a letdown. Bidco, who didn’t have much possession, snatched the win with a penalty late in the game.

With just three minutes left, George Amonno brought down Bidco’s John Kelwish Walubuka in the box, leading to the penalty. Newton Ochieng stepped up and sent Gor Mahia’s keeper, Gad Matthews, the wrong way, handing all the glory to Bidco and leaving the home fans heartbroken after their team’s fruitless attack.

Although Gor Mahia looked promising at the start, especially with new signing Ebenezer Adukwam creating some chances, they couldn’t find the back of the net.

A missed opportunity by Alpha Onyango in the 14th minute set the tone for the afternoon. Bidco focused on quick counter-attacks but couldn’t make them count either. A decent break saw Okello waste a great chance with a weak shot right at Matthews.

As the match went on, Gor Mahia struggled to break down Bidco’s defense, even after Akonnor tried to shake things up with substitutions. Their closest attempt was a long-range shot from captain Austin Odhiambo that went wide, leaving fans frustrated.

In a familiar twist, it was Bidco who made the most of their chance, thanks to Amonno’s mistake. Meanwhile, Ulinzi Stars pulled off a late win against Murang’a Seal, with Paul Okoth scoring a stoppage-time goal for the victory. Gor Mahia has some serious thinking to do after this disappointing opener, while Bidco has plenty to celebrate.
