Ugandan champions Vipers SC managed to secure a vital 1-0 away victory against Namibia’s African Stars FC in the first leg of the CAF Champions League preliminary round. The match took place on Friday evening at Cape Town Stadium, where Vipers showcased their determination and tactical prowess.
The decisive moment came early in the game, with defender Hilary Mukundane finding the back of the net in the 13th minute. Mukundane expertly redirected Karim Watambala’s powerful long-range shot, sending the ball past African Stars goalkeeper Michael James. The goal set the tone for the rest of the match, giving Vipers a significant psychological edge.
Vipers sought to extend their lead shortly after the opening goal when striker Milton Karisa set up Gusto Mulongo. However, the Namibian defense stood resolute, with Vevangapi Mbuende making a spectacular clearance off the line to keep his team in the contest.
As the first half progressed, the Vipers maintained control, with Karisa and Allan Okello continually probing the African Stars’ defense. Despite their dominance in possession and chances created, the Ugandans were unable to add to their tally before halftime.
The second half saw a rejuvenated African Stars side, who came out with renewed energy and determination. They applied pressure on Vipers’ defense and managed to force goalkeeper Denis Kiggundu into action. Kiggundu made an impressive save, denying Godwin Eiseb’s effort at his near post, showcasing his crucial role in the match.
As the game progressed, African Stars continued to test the Vipers’ defense, with Emmanuel Kalala coming close to equalizing. However, Vipers remained steadfast, with Kevin Dasylva Bady’s timely blocks preventing any breakthroughs.
In search of fresh legs, coach Ivan Minnaert made several substitutions in the second half, bringing on Odili Chukwuma, Mark Yallah, Yunus Sentamu, and Derrick Ndahiro to inject vitality into the lineup. Sentamu almost sealed the victory for Vipers deep into stoppage time, but he squandered the opportunity by missing a close-range shot after rounding the goalkeeper.
Despite the late drama, Vipers SC held on to their slender lead, setting the stage for an exciting second leg. The return match will be held at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende on September 27, where Vipers will aim to secure their advancement to the next round of the prestigious tournament. The match promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams motivated to claim victory and progress in the CAF Champions League.
