Kenya: Everton FC midfielder Tyler Jaden Napier Edward Onyango has expressed a willingness to represent Kenya’s national team, Harambee Stars, in the future. Currently on loan at Stockport County, the talented midfielder made his sentiments known during a recent interview with the AddedTimeShow.
Onyango, who was born on March 4, 2003, in England to a Kenyan father and an English mother, is eligible to play for both the Kenyan and English national teams. His performance at the youth level for England’s U-17 team has garnered attention, but he remains undecided about his international career path.
“It’s something I’ve thought about, and it’s something I’m open to,” he commented, highlighting his interest in possibly donning the Kenyan jersey.
Keeping a close eye on the Kenyan team, which recently participated in the African Nations Championship (CHAN), Onyango praised their head coach, Benni McCarthy.
“Coach Benni McCarthy has coached at a very high level, and that’s really important for the country. As a player, it is attractive and enticing to work under him,” he stated.

McCarthy, who has ambitious goals for the national team, expressed hope that Onyango would join the squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against The Gambia and Seychelles scheduled for September 5 and September 9, respectively. Unfortunately, the midfielder was unable to make this immediate commitment.
During his loan season at Stockport County, Onyango has been a standout midfielder, impressing coaching staff and fans alike with his performances. He has made seven appearances in the League One for the 2024-2025 season, contributing one assist before his progress was stalled due to injuries.
Despite these challenges, he has shown glimpses of his potential, especially during a commanding performance in a 4-1 victory against Reading.
As a player of dual nationality, Onyango’s decision could have significant ramifications for both nations. There are considerations on both sides, with discussions suggesting that playing for Kenya might offer him a more prominent role in international tournaments compared to the highly competitive England squad. His parents are reportedly supportive of a potential call-up for Kenya, adding a personal dimension to his decision-making process.
As the football community watches closely, Tyler Onyango remains a pivotal figure who could strengthen the Harambee Stars in the coming years. His future choices are anticipated with excitement, and fans of both nations hope to see him thrive, no matter which jersey he ultimately wears.
