Uganda Set to Clash with Somalia in Crucial World Cup Qualifier

Today, Monday, September 8, 2025, Uganda will take on Somalia in a highly anticipated World Cup 2026 qualifying match at the Namboole Mandela National Stadium. The match is critical for the Cranes as they seek to solidify their position in the Group G standings.

Currently, Uganda sits in second place in Group G with 12 points, trailing the group leader by 18 points after seven games played. On the other hand, Somalia finds itself at the bottom of the table with just one point from their own seven matches, unable to secure a win in the qualifiers thus far.

Group G consists of several competitive teams, including: Algeria, Mozambique, Guinea, Botswana, and Somalia. Despite their struggles, Somalia’s players will be motivated to disrupt Uganda’s campaign, aiming to salvage some pride in this East African derby.

Historically, Uganda holds a strong record against Somalia, having won all of their last five encounters. Their most recent match dates back to March 2023 in Berkane, where Uganda secured a slim 1-0 victory, thanks to an early goal from their star forward, Rogers Mato.

Uganda’s head coach, Paul Joseph Put, has emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum following their impressive 4-0 victory over Mozambique on Friday. This win marked a significant turnaround from their earlier 3-1 defeat in Maputo and revitalized the team’s World Cup aspirations.

In a press conference, Put described the performance against Mozambique as one of the best he’s overseen since taking charge. He cited the team’s energy, ball distribution, and chances created as being on par with top European teams. “When we create chances and score goals, we grow in confidence. Now we must bring that same intensity to the match against Somalia,” Put stated.

Team captain Khalid Aucho has also weighed in, warning against any sense of complacency. Despite Somalia’s poor form, Aucho acknowledged the unpredictable nature of derby matches in East Africa. “In Africa, there are no small teams, and everyone wants to win. We are at home, and our goal is to secure all three points,” he remarked, urging fans to come out in large numbers, even more than they did for the Mozambique match.

Rogers Mato remains Uganda’s key player heading into this encounter. With three goals in the qualifiers, the forward is in excellent form, having scored twice against Mozambique. His ability to break through Somalia’s defense will be crucial for Uganda’s success.

With Algeria currently dominating the group, holding a six-point lead, the competition for the playoff spot remains open. Uganda, Mozambique, Guinea, and Botswana are closely contending for the second position, each separated by just three points. The winner of the group will qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup, while the runners-up will have a shot at a playoff opportunity.

For Somalia, who has faced a dismal campaign, collecting only one point, the match provides an opportunity to disrupt Uganda’s ambitions and gain some much-needed respect. Despite being out of contention for a World Cup spot, the Ocean Stars will be motivated to perform on the grand stage, looking to claim a historic upset.

Kickoff is set for [insert time], and both teams are sure to bring their best as they aim for a vital victory in the quest for World Cup qualification.
