Kenya’s Visa-Free Entry and Hospitality Praised as Stakeholders Reflect on CHAN 2024 Experience

Kenya has been celebrated for its efforts to enhance the experience of the football community during the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024. As the tournament concluded on Saturday, August 30, stakeholders shared their uplifting experiences.

This biennial continental tournament, co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania under the banner of PAMOJA—meaning “togetherness” in Swahili—marked a significant milestone, as it was the first major continental tournament in the region in nearly four decades. The historical participation of the Kenyan national team, Harambee Stars, made the event even more memorable.

Despite being newcomers, Kenya made a significant impact by winning their challenging group, which included Morocco, Angola, Zambia, and the DR Congo. Although Harambee Stars fell short in the quarter-finals, losing 3-4 on penalties to Madagascar after a thrilling 1-1 draw, their performance marked a proud moment in Kenyan football history.

Morocco ultimately claimed victory in the 2024 CHAN, defeating Madagascar 3-2 in the final match at the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani on August 30.

Renowned African sports journalist Mamadou Gaye highlighted Kenya’s efforts: “This was largely a successful tournament. I would like to congratulate Kenya for making it visa-free for Africans attending the event. Unfortunately, that was not the case for Uganda and Tanzania, who required visa applications, making it challenging for us. For that, I give them a yellow card.” His words resonated during a press conference with CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Winnie Ndakoloki, a sports journalist from DR Congo, expressed her joy: “This was my second time covering the tournament. Kenyans are more hospitable, and the fan experience has been amazing. Although I was disappointed that DR Congo exited early, I commend CAF for their organization and look forward to an even better AFCON in Morocco.”

Angela Nasirumbi, a Kenyan fan, reflected on her newfound understanding: “I have learned so much about CHAN and football. As a nation, we hadn’t realized its importance until now. This is an incredible tournament, and I believe Kenyans will focus more on CHAN going forward.”

Moroccan fan Mohammed Chadi shared his pride: “After our heartbreak in the last edition, winning this title was wonderful. The support from Kenyans made us feel at home, enriching our experience.”

Edwin Omollo saw hope for the future: “There’s no reason we shouldn’t qualify for CHAN. Harambee Stars showcased our potential, and this experience will motivate players to pursue qualification with renewed passion.”

Kenyan President William Ruto praised the event, stating, “This tournament exemplified unity beyond sports. We appreciate everyone who contributed to its success. CHAN 2024 highlights the spirit of Pan-Africanism, demonstrating our continent’s unity, resilience, and talent. This celebration of African excellence inspires us all, reminding us that our future is bright.”
